Global interface admin for Vikipolimer
- Global user: Vikipolimer (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
Hello,
I am Vikipolimer, a long-time active contributor to Wikimedia projects. I have been contributing to the Turkish Wikipedia for 11 years, where I currently serve as an administrator, interface administrator, and oversight. Thanks to knowledge in MediaWiki JS and OOUI, I am well-versed in the technical requirements of Wikimedia projects. This experience reflects my capacity to successfully adapt and maintain the Adiutor tool for local wikis. I have previously adapted Adiutor for the French, Serbian, and Hungarian Wikis, enhancing the ease of use for users in these languages.
The primary reasons for my application are as follows:
- I possess the necessary technical knowledge and experience to effectively adapt the Adiutor tool to local Wikimedia projects. This will enable more users to utilize the tool efficiently.
- I can allocate time to ensure that Adiutor functions smoothly on wikis where it has already been adapted and perform necessary updates as required. This will ensure the tool remains functional and up-to-date.
- With my long-standing contributions to Wikimedia projects, I am experienced in understanding communities and offering solutions tailored to project needs. As a global interface administrator, I aim to leverage this experience on a broader scale.
My intention as a global interface administrator is to contribute to the overall health and user experience of Wikimedia projects, making the Adiutor tool accessible to more languages and communities.
I possess all the necessary information for the evaluation of my application and am always open to collaboration with the community. Furthermore, as an experienced user, I aim to utilize my extensive knowledge and expertise in software coding and interface design to assist other wikis.
Best regards, 𝗩𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿 ℣ 21:41, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- I'm confused: is this for Adiutor, and if so, have any wikis (outside of the few you mentioned) asked for you to enable it on that wiki? Leaderboard (talk) 14:57, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Leaderboard, Indeed, they submit their requests via a Telegram group. In addition to that channel, I also receive requests through various other communication channels. My primary objective is to fulfill these requests and make valuable contributions to interface-related wikis by leveraging my expertise in MediaWiki JavaScript and OOUI, not just limited to Adiutor. If my request is deemed inappropriate, the topic may be closed, and my request archived accordingly. 𝗩𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿 ℣ 17:05, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

- @Xaosflux, In short, my lack of knowledge about an ongoing discussion regarding introducing a gadget on the English Wikipedia appears to be the reason behind why I do not have such permissions. However, it seems there isn't a specific policy for introducing new gadgets across all wikis. My goal here isn't just to add a gadget to one wiki; rather, it's to express my desire to utilize my existing knowledge for the benefit of all wikis. It seems that this intention is being perceived as a potentially harmful factor, so I'm considering withdrawing and archiving this request. I didn't anticipate that contributing as a globally would be this challenging. @Leaderboard you may archive this request. 𝗩𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿 ℣ 16:33, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
- Correct, there is not a global gadget policy, however many projects have local policies and expectations, and a GIE would be expected to follow every single one of them when making changes as large as introducing gadgets - especially on large projects. — xaosflux Talk 16:38, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

Global rollback for Count Count

Hi all! I would like to request global rollback rights for my crosswiki anti-vandalism and anti-spam work. While fighting spam I won't frequently use rollback, but the autoreviewrestore right is still beneficial for manual reverts in projects that use flagged revisions. For anti-vandalism work global rollback is very helpful for reverting high-velocity crosswiki vandals. Also I am getting a bit tired of filling out captchas.
I am a sysop and ex-arb on dewiki, rollbacker on enwiki and wikidata and global abuse filter helper. I have reviewed the global rollback policy. Thanks, --Count Count (talk) 14:00, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

- Support trusted user. I'm a bit surprised though how easily this requests is getting support given Fr33kman is back doing SWMT stuff for just a couple of weeks after a ten year? break with xwiki activity still being quite low [1]. We should probably discuss if we sometimes set too strict requirements if we compare this with failed GR requests with similar level of trust and similar xwiki activity, e.g. [2] --Johannnes89 (talk) 07:56, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 16:39, 3 September 2023 (UTC) - With former stewards, I would be willing to support them getting global rollback back in most cases. If they had the xwiki experience to be a steward, they have the experience to be a global rollbacker today. I would have supported XenonX3's global rollback request if I had seen it. As I have done before, I'll point out that now we have TWGlobal, SWViewer and "fake rollback", there is rarely an actual need for having global rollback. If you are in SWViewer, there is no noticeable difference between undoing and rollbacking. IMO, we should be more generous in giving global rollbacker out because of this. So yes, I think we are certainly on the "too strict" side rather than "too lenient." --Ferien (talk) 23:30, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't want to discuss specific GR requests or criticise anyone's points in favour/against a requestor, it's just a general feeling that we (including myself) sometimes set expectations too high, almost as if it was a request for GS instead of GR. Perhaps this is because GR requirements („demonstrably active in cross-wiki counter-vandalism or anti-spam activities (...) and make heavy use of revert on many wikis“) are a bit vague and the permissions are bundled with some other rights (e.g. autopatroll, autoreviewrestore) which have lead to discussions in the past (I remember enwiki manually disabling autopatrol for new articles created by global rollbackers after bad page creations some years ago). And you're only active since July this year. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 14:27, 3 September 2023 (UTC)- Oppose per Minorax --𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 14:54, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose per Minorax; I don't support if the user is trusted but not experienced. Now that we have Twinkle and SWViewer, the advantages of GR are limited — we don't necessarily need those to patrol small wikis, I think. --Tmv (talk) 16:24, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- I think small wikis definitely need to be patrolled. You get a lot of petty vandalism and spaming with advertisements. SWviewer is a great tool but I've found that sometimes you need to look at the actuaal page to see if it's vandalism etc. or not. When you've got the page open it's useful to have rollback available. fr33kman 23:11, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- I sometimes see people reverting edits just based on recent revision without looking at the page history and causing a mess, so I too prefer visiting actual page many of the times. That aside, I think we seek a reasonable degree of competence, experience and trust for these roles. For those willing to return to the roles that they left in good standing, the bar should definitely be lower.--BRP ever 02:06, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- I too prefer to visit the actual page, but then Twinkle helps. I feel that the load from using Twinkle is actually not too heavy.
- Being a former steward is a strong vote of trust. On the other hand, experience should count separately. I have noticed that about half of your edits on small wiki include the creation of your user pages and edits not related to vandalisms. In light of this, I conclude that we should still wait. --Tmv (talk) 22:50, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

- I need to see a better reason than "SWMT stuff"; @Fr33kman:, you need to explain why the existing tools such as Twinkle don't work. I also share Johannes' concern in differential scoring (i.e, discrimination), which has been a notorious problem with the community as a whole. Leaderboard (talk) 14:53, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- Those tools do work, but there is a reason rollback was invented in the first place and that is (iirc) to save on data. Using TW or SWViewer is using undo and that sends the same amount of data onto the page whereas rollback just reverts the page to what is was without sending that same amount of data. Whilst I know that Wikipedia is not paper, its bytes, the more data being sent the more hard drives being purchased. It's a small thing but an important one in my opinion. fr33kman 15:35, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Fr33kman:, that in itself isn't a valid reason. You're correct in that rollback uses fewer bytes, but users' reasoning for having rollback is usually much stronger than that. Leaderboard (talk) 16:08, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- My reason for wanting rollback is because sometimes you need to bring up the actual page to determine what you want, at that point I'd prefer to use rollback rather than TW or undo. fr33kman 16:18, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

Not done, while the discussion has demonstrated that the user is without a doubt trusted and I myself welcome a former steward returning to the activity, it was also indicated that cross-wiki activity is lacking at the moment. According to the global rollback policy "For consideration, users must be demonstrably active in cross-wiki counter-vandalism or anti-spam activities ... and make heavy use of revert on many wikis. They may request access ..., providing evidence of this." I am afraid the discussion has shown that this condition is not met. Please do not let this discourage you and please do apply after a couple of months of cross-wiki activity again. Thank you for your work! --Base (talk) 23:09, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

- @Leaderboard Your question is a bit confusing. I hope that I don’t need a real issue to get this right, per policy its not necessary and we all now that GR is really helpful. Beside that: yes, there are issues. The rights package of the Global Rollbacker is quite extensive and very helpful. Captcha is not the problem, because of global SUL, but many of my reverts in small wikis are not based on SWV, because I also use guc to follow cross-wiki spammers and vandals and use global abuse filters. In the diffview I can only use TwinkleGlobal for reverting, but there I still have problems with abuse filters & if I have to revert many edits of one user I can faster rollback, because the rollback button is already there while I have to wait 5 seconds for TwinkleGlobal to load. But that are only small issues, I think autoreviewrestore and autopatrol will help me the most in projects with only a few patrollers / reviewers. And patrolmarks will help me to patrol the recent changes in projects manually, which I also sometimes do. Feel free to ask if you still have any questions or concerns. - "and fight the vandals (I do this throughe SWViewer)" - ok, and why do you need global rollback as a result? It's not meant to be a difficult question, but since we already have enough tools for cross-wiki patrollers, some reasoning is required. Leaderboard (talk) 11:14, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Leaderboard: Thanks for your question. It's mostly a matter of rollbacking mass vandalism by one user. It's much easier to click a single button to undo an edit right away than to make multiple clicks with each edit. In addition, very rarely, but it also happened that it simply did not allow me to undo edits due to, for example, the abuse filter, rollback solves the issue. And, of course, I think you'll agree with me that the autopatrol is also quite a convenience. AramilFeraxa (Write to me!) 11:52, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

User:1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 21:15, 14 September 2023 (UTC) - If a regular user with TW could do that we probably wouldn't need to have GR at all. No? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Styyx (talk) 14:12, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

I use Hurricane Electric's gratis https://tunnelbroker.net/ as an IPv6 provider because my ISP does not offer native IPv6 connectivity. The 2001:470:0:0:0:0:0:0/32 network controlled by Tunnelbroker has been blocked as WM:NOP with block ID #535788. Because this block does not allow authenticated users to edit I currently need to modify my network config in order to edit any SUL wiki. --BryanDavis (talk) 21:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to request access to enable 2fa to my account. I must admit I don't have a very defensible need to have 2fa enabled on my account other than I like to have it enabled on any account of mine on any service that supports it purely out of an abundance of caution around security.
