Sisi Wei was honored as the 2024 Freedom of the Press Rising Star by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Wednesday. The committee noted Sisi’s ability for “empowering her journalism colleagues for years, whether it was overseeing editorial teams at ProPublica to produce investigations that served the public interest; her leadership at OpenNews and the DEI Coalition to foster a more anti-racist and equitable journalism industry; or her current role at CalMatters and The Markup, where she is developing new ways for journalism to drive positive change.” Sisi accepted the award at the Oct. 16 ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City. https://cal.news/3zZvCB1 📝 Sonya Quick 📸 Nick Tininenko for Aspen Ideas

🗓 AI is transforming everything from how we communicate to how we vote. Join us on Friday, Oct. 25 in Los Angeles as we explore how AI could transform our democracy. We're coming together with the Democracy Center at the Japanese American National Museum to dive into these questions: 1. Should governments take legislative action to monitor AI's growth? 2. How will the AI revolution shape the future of democracy? 3. What might we want to see in an AI Bill of Rights? Panelists include CalMatters cofounder Dave Lesher; Ted Schilowitz, a noted futurist; and John Bwarie of Stratiscope for a conversation about the intersection of democracy and AI. Democracy Center director James E. Herr, For Freedoms cofounder Michelle Woo and TV writer/producer Liz Hsiao Lan Alper will also be on the panel. An interactive breakout session for further discussion about AI will follow. 🗓️ RSVP for this free event: https://lnkd.in/gqc7gfUu

We couldn't agree more! 🎉 Sisi Wei 🎊
“I think Sisi is a quiet revolutionary,” says Nabiha Syed, executive director of Mozilla Foundation. “She's not a person who will be out there championing her own work. The way she affects change is by equipping other people to do it.” And Sisi Wei has been empowering her journalism colleagues for years, whether it was overseeing editorial teams at ProPublica to produce investigations that served the public interest; her leadership at OpenNews and the DEI Coalition to foster a more anti-racist and equitable journalism industry; or her current role at CalMatters and The Markup, where she is developing new ways for journalism to drive positive change. “Sisi’s work is about amplifying the best of what is around to tell the truth in the most comprehensive way,” Syed continues. “She just does it every single day, [in] everything she does.” We’re thrilled to honor Sisi at #RCFPAwards24 with the Rising Star Award. We’re at quite a moment in the push to expand youth journalism. There’s growing aspiration for more youth to take command over their stories, communities and schools as they prepare to engage the democratic process. It's an incredible time to contribute to that hope! Our work at CalMatters and others’ was recently highlighted in the New York Times. And this weekend, we met with other youth journalism leaders and thinkers in St. Paul to share practices and ideate about the future. Big thanks to Ellen Austin for convening us from across the nation's corners so we can learn from each other – different models, same end goal! Thanks to Kenzie O'Keefe for hosting and sharing the success of her inspiring ThreeSixty Journalism program with us. We learned so much from the practices and survey data shared by Journalistic Learning Initiative, Press Pass NYC, Medill's Teach for Chicago Journalism, Kent State's Center for Scholastic Journalism, University of Minnesota's Journalism Center and the Center for Community News. Erin Schneider, always good to have you as my co-pilot to huddle over our work and next steps! Michael A. Spikes, Ph.D., you know I had to shout you out! Your insight is always on point. And overall, cheers to hanging IRL, as those Gen Zers say, with friends old and new. Many more strategy conversations to come! Photo credits: Ellen Austin, Michael Lozano

🗓 Los Angeles County is home to more than 75,000 unhoused people -- more than two-thirds of whom live on the street, according to the county's point-in-time count data. Measure A is supposed to help change that by raising taxes on certain items sold in the county. What exactly would this measure do, and could it make a dent in the problem? Join us for a free, in-person panel discussion with experts who can help us dig into this issue. This panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 9th, from 12:00pm — 1:00pm at Studio MLA. A networking session with free lunch will take place from 11:30am — 12:00pm for attendees and panelists. Our moderator: Marisa Kendall, who covers California's homelessness crisis for CalMatters Our panelists: Lance Christensen, VP of Education Policy and Government Affairs at California Policy Center Tommy Newman, VP of Public Affairs and Activation at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles Cheri Todoroff, Exec. Dir. of the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative Shawn Morrissey, VP of Advocacy and Community Engagement for Union Station Homeless Services Thank you to our sponsor California Community Foundation, as well as our convening partners Center for Nonprofit Management & SoCal Grantmakers
