Absolut Vodka’s (The Absolut Group) distillery, one of the most energy-efficient in the world, is now powered solely by renewable energy sources!   In 2020, the distillery, based in Nöbbelöv close to Åhus in southern Sweden, committed to being fossil-free before the end of 2025 and now they have reached this milestone ahead of schedule 👏   Compared to the average distillery, Absolut emits seven times less CO2 per litre of alcohol (Average data from 2022 Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) benchmarking study) and makes its raw spirit from scratch using wheat produced by around 300 local farms and water from one of northern Europe’s biggest natural aquifers, rather than buying from external sources.   Congratulations to the Absolut teams for reaching this milestone, a great example of the dedication throughout our Group to be leaders in sustainability.

Using a large stone wheel for squeezing agave is called the “tahona process” and is one of the oldest, most traditional ways to make tequila.  The tahona is the name of a huge wheel made from volcanic stone. The wheel is attached to a long pole which slowly pulls the wheel to squeeze the juice from the agave fibers. The “Piedra Tahona” used at Altos is an instrumental part of the tequila making process. Did you know Altos (The Absolut Group) is only one of ten brands that still use the tahona process today.

John Matthew Palapal is the Rising Stars 2024 winner! Facilitated by Pernod Ricard, Rising Stars is a training program for Marriott International EMEA bartenders, culminating with a cocktail competition. From over 200 entries, nine finalists participated in a week of workshops focusing on sustainability, innovation, spirits masterclasses, entrepreneurship and mixology. This year, the challenge was to reimagine a drink from the past, with a unique and sustainable twist. ‘Salty Ruibarbo’, a twist on the classic Salty Dog cocktail, was the winning drink created by John Matthew Palapal, Bartender at St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, Saadiyat Island. Originally, the cocktail consists of vodka or gin, grapefruit juice, and salt. In John’s version, it's all about blending flavours without altering the essence of the original cocktail. Congratulations to John and all of our finalists! #RisingStars #Bartending
