Wrote a short post on history repeating itself with the explosion of growth in Retail Media. With marketing dollars continuing to shift to performance focused spend, Retail Media sits at an intersection that promises tremendous growth whichever turn you take. Pent up demand for high ROI channels of marketing, privacy friendly advertising, and high ROI for all participating parties. Opportunities abound. And another takeaway - Amazon does it again by showing the world that not only can it redefine how humans shop and lead the world on cloud infrastructure - but it can rebuild a better version of the commercial lifeblood of the internet by inventing ads that work. I've spent over 8 figures across linear and streaming TV. Coming from digital world, I had very little idea what I was getting into. But when this was an initiative for the current brand, I decided to do what I always do... ask a bunch of annoying questions. Here's what I learned from those annoying questions 👇 The biggest thing to remember when buying TV ad space, is that the consumer doesn't care or realize if they are watching streaming or linear. They are simply watching TV. Because of this concept, you'll hear the term "Convergent TV" thrown around. This encompasses anything that shows up on the big screen (or can show up on the big screen). These are typically bucketed into linear (cable), and streaming (Hulu, Netflix, Prime, etc). If this was Meta, you could just input your creative with broad targeting and let the ads serve where they have the highest chance of response. But TV isn't quite there yet. Until that time, you have to buy linear and streaming separately (and there are several options on how to buy each). Let's start with linear... For most DTC brands dipping their toes in TV, they'll buy remnant space. This is the inventory that hasn't already been bought up by large companies in what's called the Upfronts (buys that happen many months in advance of airing). There are other levels between Upfronts and remnant space, but we'll keep things simple for now. Buying this type of inventory has been made approachable by large TV agencies. You give the agency your money, and they place the buys for you. They measure the performance based on CPAs, see which creative and placements perform the best, then put more budget towards the ones with the best performance. It's kinda like circa 2015 Meta media buying where you adjusted audiences and placement regularly to try and hack the system. It's still in the human decision-making-phase. Then there's streaming... Here, you have 2 different options, but most go with option 1. 1️⃣ Programmatic CTV 2️⃣ Direct buys Option 1 has also been made popular by similar (although often separate) TV agencies. Here, you buy an audience and the platform does the work of finding what streaming platform/show they are watching. There are some powerful targeting capabilities here. For example, you can remarket to people who watched a certain sports event, allowing you to play in the space without the expensive linear buy. Option 2 is going directly to the streaming platform to place a buy (i.e. - straight to Hulu). Typically this comes with less audience targeting options, and less measurement. Roku Wants To Use Home Screen For New Types of Ads: An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Streamable: Roku wants to take the term "ad-supported" to another level. The company held its quarterly earnings conference call on Thursday, and revealed that 81.6 million households used a Roku device or smart TV to stream video in the first three months of the year. As part of the report, company CEO Anthony Wood laid out ideas for how the company would increase revenues in 2024. Unsurprisingly, advertising will be an important centerpiece of that strategy, and Wood provided some details on what Roku users can expect from their ad experience going forward. The idea of bringing more ads to the Roku home screen is nothing new, but that's what Wood focused on in his discussion with analysts about how to boost revenue on the Roku platform. The company has already begun putting more static ads on the screen, but now it appears that Roku is considering how to get video ads embedded into the home page as well. Wood said that he believes that a video-enabled ad unit on the Roku home screen will be "very popular with advertisers," considering that Roku devices have the reach to put ads in front of 120 million pairs of eyes every day. He also said that the company is "testing other types of video ad units, looking at other experiences" that it can bring to the Roku home screen. As another way to boost ad revenues, Wood suggested that the company's home screen experiences could be leveraged to deliver more ads. He pointed to the NBA Zone, which Roku launched at the beginning of April as an example. Roku can use these themed content hubs to deliver ads more tailored to fans of that particular content, harnessing the power of popular sports to pull more ad revenue. Customers concerned that Roku will just gunk up their home screen with ads are likely wondering if the company has made any moves toward actually making the user experience on the platform better. The good news is that Roku has also introduced a recommended content row, that will compile picks from across various streaming services and use AI to point customers toward new shows and movies they might like. If you were offered a loan at 23% interest with daily repayment terms, would you take it? I did. In the early years of building Tease, we did our first $500k in revenue with a $1k secured visa. Sound impressive? It was actually a logistical nightmare. Juggling payments, inventory, and everything else that comes with trying to get a business off the ground with limited cash flow held our growth back substantially. Because no other banks would lend to me at that time, I took that 12 month, 23% loan as a calculated risk. After all, as any CPG brand founder can attest to, you absolutely need to spend money to make money if you want to grow. Thousands in interest later, I paid it back months ahead of schedule once it served its purpose feeling so much relief. I knew for my business, I didn't want to raise $ from VC's and angels or dilute equity. If I wanted to keep bootstrapping my way up and retain 100% ownership, I'd have to get more savvy about taking on future debt. Then just a few months afterward, and having built better relationships with traditional banks, I took out a 6 figure loan with better terms that allowed me save 10% on our product costs, and make our business incredibly profitable that year 👀 In this interview with Beauty Independent, I uncover some of my top considerations for any Founder who is considering taking out loans - especially in todays economic climate.
