This is how I am mentoring my son his CompSci classes... I just keep repeating it over and over. I should hire my daughter to do the same thing as it's pretty common. READ THE REQUIREMENTS! That's all. That's every point he's missed on every project. Just read until you understand and ask questions if you still do not. His prof makes everything seem so simple, if you read and follow the requirements. But that seems to be the hardest part, the lesson the prof is trying to convey. He even lists the crash and burn rules. "If you support grammar that was not given then -100" etc. There is no room for misinterpretation. Therefore my help is just me reading the assignments back to him and making sure he has done what they say. Then again, maybe it's not a good lesson as requirements are rarely this in depth. Perhaps it's just 20 years of giving the same requirements that leads to this level of detail. I'll keep that to myself for now, he doesn't need to know that 🤫

Great insights! I had no idea software engineering was going to be hit so hard. I've about lost my shirt, for over 6 months without making a single plan because I didn't expect a layoff to happen. No company had or has money to spend on failed tech and I can't blame recruiters now-a-days for the downfall in job hirings either. Most good recruiters have disappeared into the wind. Lucky for them! AI was built to replace the mediocre not help the juniors grow into the industry which was pre-covid thinking. If you want to be apart of the solution and not the problem, teach HR people to see the value in hiring smart people not robots.

🚨 "Sales Sucks." 🚨 I hear this all the time—and honestly, I 100% agree. - No one wants to feel like they’re being sold to. But here’s the thing: people do want to be guided, supported, and heard. Whether it’s a job, a car, a service, or a product being sold, those old-school, transactional sales days are long gone—and that’s a good thing! The ability to build relationships and have real conversations is now the most important part of any successful business. As a “Salesperson,” ask yourself these 3 key questions: 1️⃣ Am I becoming an expert in my field, trusted for my knowledge and guidance? 2️⃣ Am I genuinely focused on solving my prospect’s problems—not just chasing a commission? 3️⃣ Am I constantly growing, upskilling, and taking a consultative approach to conversations? Now, how’s your leader and team handling this? Strong leadership isn’t about being a “boss.” It’s about fostering peer leadership, collaboration, and support—driven by intent and purpose. Just yesterday, I was in the field with a new hire for some discovery calls, and he told me, “I haven’t enjoyed conversations like this in a long time!” It reminded me of my earlier thought: “Sales Sucks” But remember, the career and your purpose doesn’t. Want to make someone's Friday? If you've got an open job req, skip the process today and personally spend some time looking for people who you think could be a great fit for it. And, without them even knowing your job exists or applying to it, reach out to them and have a conversation about them and the job. Your intuition about what YOU need as a hiring manager far outweighs the ability of any application process to decide it for you (although, I agree they're needed). I think this is especially a great idea if you notice someone (say even someone like me) who might be currently looking for a tech job but you think they could potentially help you solve some serious problems you're having in an operations context using their tech skills. You never know the sheer impact you will have on their day or their life, and you might just possibly find the most amazing candidate you've ever sourced or had sourced for you.
