Imposter Syndrome is different for you. It's not just internal. It's environmental. You know about regular Imposter Syndrome - the one where you think you're a fraud, tell yourself your success is down to luck and think that any minute now you're going to be exposed - but do you know about environmental Imposter Syndrome and how it's holding you back? As a black lawyer in a white world you know how hard you worked to get here. So you may not be walking around thinking you're a fraud. But when your white privately-educated peers always get allocated the best work When you look around and there's no one who looks like you and there are no role models you can relate to When you're told you need to change the way you speak You KNOW you're not an imposter. But experiences like these make you FEEL like one: isolated undervalued not enough less than other than This is environmental Imposter Syndrome and it's holding you back. How you feel at work matters. When you're striving to succeed in a high pressure world, how you feel matters more than what you know. It's why you keep working twice as hard and striving for perfection. It's why you constantly second-guess yourself and worry that you don't know enough or that you'll get it wrong. It's why you're hard on yourself, judge yourself and make negative feedback mean something about you. And it's why your confidence lags so far behind your achievements and why you're not getting the recognition you deserve. So whether your Imposter Syndrome is internal ("My success is down to luck") or environmental ("Why am I the only one?"), the result is the same: you're not performing anywhere near to your potential. This is good to know. When you understand the problem, you're one step closer to the solution. Happy Friday P.S. Ready to overcome Imposter Syndrome?
