This quote conveys a powerful idea. Self-awareness and managing emotions are critical during any difficult mediation or negotiation. As in all things, absolutes or extremes are rarely true. The key is not to get triggered.

Attending the ABA 2024 Advanced Mediation and Advocacy Skills Institute these past two days was invaluable. I gained some wonderful insights into how to better help people resolve conflict—less dispute, more resolution! #disputeresolutionday

During negotiation, don't be a lion. If the other party perceives you to be a threat, it will be difficult to impossible to reach a resolution. But you also need to be authentic and in the game to make a deal. The following article discusses how a perceived threat is a psychological barrier to negotiations. Last week, I was privileged to be in Beaufort, South Carolina, to conduct nine oral history interviews with Veterans. These Veterans were from the Marines, Army, and Air Force who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. This esteemed group ranked from Captain to Colonel, and they were recipients of numerous commendations including the Legion of Merit, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart. Their roles ranged from Fighter Pilot, Bomber Pilot, Navigator, and Infantry Officer. I am honored to have recorded their stories. #makinghistoryproject #veteranoralhistory

Neuroscience suggests that our brains are hard-wired with a tribal mentality. This mentality worked well to survive but is not helpful now. Neuroscientist David Eagleman suggests how we can reset our brains to better understand each other and solve problems.
