📢 The EU #NatureRestoration Law entered into force! The law requires to put in place restoration measures to achieve good condition of habitats on land and at sea. Now EU Countries will have to: 🏞 restore at least 20% of EU land and sea areas by 2030, and all areas in need of restoration by 2050 📜 develop national restoration plans 🇪🇺 submit a draft plan to the Commission within 2 years, setting out milestones for 2030, 2040 and 2050 This is a key instrument to #RestoreNature, reach climate neutrality by 2050 & guarantee food security for all. We can all do something to protect our climate and environment. 🌱    That’s what drove #EUClimatePact photo competition winner Jussi Isoaho to take a stand and successfully propose an initiative to protect the forest shoreline in Kuusamo 🇫🇮. Protected and well-managed forests capture carbon from the atmosphere and help regulate the climate.  But even if you don’t manage to protect a whole forest, Jussi believes that all everyday actions, no matter how small, make a difference for tackling climate change. These forests store 2 times as much CO2 as younger forests 🌳🌲 But old growth and primary forests have become rare, small and fragmented. Undisturbed by human activities for centuries, they hold old, large trees, complex structures, and microhabitats as well as high amounts of deadwood. They are unique ecosystems and a prime example of our natural heritage, that's why we need to protect them.
