Thanksgiving came early this year for Eli Roth after his new holiday slasher film, Thanksgiving, arrived in cinemas to some of the best reviews of the filmmaker’s career. Well-regarded for groundbreaking 2000s horror films like Cabin Fever (2002) and Hostel (2005), Roth has been trying to make Thanksgiving for nearly as long. Originally conceived as a “joke” trailer to be inserted between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double feature in 2007, Thanksgiving has been an idea that never left Roth or his childhood friend Jeff Rendell, the latter of whom co-wrote both the Grindhouse trailer and the actual 2023 slasher that is making a bloody splash today.
When we spoke to Roth about Thanksgiving, we chatted about his and Rendell’s affection for the curious subgenre of holiday-themed slasher movies released in the 1970s and ‘80s, as well as how the director finally figured out the best way to spread the...

No Troma remake should attempt to match Troma at its revolting, boundary-demolishing, trigger-happy game. Take 1980’s Mother’s Day, for example. Troma Entertainment ringleader Lloyd Kaufman let his brother Charles Kaufman shoot a rape-revenge exploitation sleazefest no mamma would applaud. Darren Lynn Bousman’s 2010 remake abandons Tromaville signatures almost entirely for a mean-mugging reinterpretation rooted in more straightforward thriller formulas because few indie studios are willing to push as far as Troma — especially in today’s acutely more socially attentive climate. You could get away with Mother’s Day (1980) in the 80s, especially with its cereal bowls filled with consumerism commentaries, but even today’s midnighter-loving moviegoer is looking for something more evolved.
Then again, Troma’s catalog might be the most fertile soil for remakes, given how even midrange studio pocket change would be a budgetary increase. Troma Studios has earned its legacy as an independent horror tentpole, but...

John Huston plays every narrative card in the deck for the difficult task of expressing the great doctor’s insights into psychoanalysis. His actors personalize the concepts of neurosis, etc., investing us in Sigmund’s search for answers in long-ago Vienna. The fascination has multiple levels: in investigating the nature of ‘hysteria’ Dr. Sigmund Freud finds that he shares to a degree the same mental aberrations, as does his mentor. Actor Montgomery Clift was fighting numerous personal demons at the time, and Huston’s directing methods were described by some as cruel. Superb production values and Jerry Goldsmith’s music score enhance the experience. The scan on view is Huston’s director’s cut, not Universal’s shorter original release version.

Troma Entertainment has been around since 1974, when college friends Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz founded the fiercely independent film studio. The pair met at Yale. Since its inception, the studio has become one of the largest independent film studios and distributors in The United States.
Troma has been instrumental in launching the careers of many of Hollywood’s biggest names. Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, and Kevin Costner all worked in Troma films toward the beginning of their careers. Legendary genre writer/director James Gunn landed his first directing gig (Tromeo and Juliette) via Troma Entertainment. Troma is also responsible for lending source material to several high profile remakes. Darren Lynn Bousman (Repo! The Genetic Opera) loosely remade the 1980 Troma film Mother’s Day. Though the company had yet to be formed, Mother’s Day was the first unofficial Troma film. Written and directed by Charles Kaufman (Loyd’s brother), it’s a violent, cheapjack revenge film with several of the patented Troma ingredients already in place. Uneasy comedic elements, amateur performances, sketchy scripting and aggressive misogyny abound. In spite of all this, Mother’s Day is also a fairly engrossing little exploitation film that seems to get better with age. Featuring the late, great Beatrice Pons as Mother Rose.
Special Features Include:

Filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman posted a new blog entry with a post-production update on his remake of Mother's Day , paired with a new image pictured below. While the hope was to get the movie out by mother's day of 2010, the filmmakers are not settling on an official release date for the independently financed flick until a distribution company picks it up and they'll begin screening it for studios immediately. We probably won't see a trailer either until distribution is locked. "I think fans of the original Charles Kaufman film will find a lot to like in this version. Yes, it.s completely different, but at its core . it.s the same perverse story of Mother and her kids," writes Bousman. "In my opinion, Mother's Day is the most intense movie I have worked on....

Things have been quiet on the Mother's Day redux front for the past month, but today director Darren Bousman let loose with an extensive update and provided a new still from the flick.
Here are a few excerpts from Bousman's blog:
When the script came in for Mother's Day, the film’s producer Richard Saperstein pointed out that there were a lot of characters in the script. Like Saw 2, I laughed it off, and said I can handle it. Now, here I am in post, again crying… Not because it’s hard to keep track of everyone, but because every single person in this movie is Amazing and I don’t want to cut one frame of their performances… They gave me Gold – and Gold shall I deliver. But, alas, part of the post process is cutting down scenes, performances, and story to fit in cohesive, dramatic fashion… And Not Be 6 hours long…...

It's a Norman Rockwell gone wrong idea. Imagine if it was set in Leave It to Beaver , then make it scary," explains Bousman during an afternoon break from shooting day 27 of 35 in Winnipeg, Canada. In May we got the creepiest Mother's Day news ever -- Darren Lynn Bousman was prepping a remake of Charles Kaufman's Mother's Day -- a film where a few boys rape and murder some girls to please their sadistic mother. It was just the sort of thing for the mom who already has enough flowers. But now the flick's got a more socially palatable plot, and our favorite evil caregiver. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Rebecca De Mornay has signed on to play Mom.

Most people recognize Rebecca De Mornay from her turn as the psychotic, homicidal nanny in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (though I personally hold her more dearly as the closest Disney ever dared get to sexy as Lady DeWinter in The Three Musketeers). Apparently ready to take the next step in exploring the mind of the maternally malignant, she's moving up from mommy killer to mommy who kills. Three time Saw director Darren Bousman and first time screenplay writer Scott Kilam have teamed up to remake Charles Kaufman's (not to be confused with Charlie Kaufman) 1980 horror flick Mother's Day, the story of a woman who elicits the love of her two sons by seeing which of them can most creatively rape and kill women. With a plot like that it.s hard to imagine why it hasn.t already been remade before. According to the Hollywood Reporter De...

Rebecca De Mornay is getting in touch with her maternal instincts in "Mother's Day," Darren Lynn Bousman's remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic.
De Mornay's casting as the title character is the final piece of the puzzle for the movie, which begins shooting this month in Winnipeg.
The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother.
The new version, written by Scott Milam, has been remolded as a psychological thriller in which the wicked family returns to the house where they grew up to terrorize the new owners and their guests. Mother, as De Mornay's character is called, will go to any length to protect her children.
The part echoes the evil nanny role she had in 1992's "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," a comparison not lost on the filmmakers.

Update: Jaime King (The Tripper, My Bloody Valentine 3D) has her cards and flowers ready for "Mother's Day," Darren Lynn Bousman's remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic, and Shawn Ashmore (The Ruins, Frozen), Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega and Matt O'Leary (who stars alongside Briana in Sorority Row next month) are in talks to join the production, writes the Hollywood Reporter.

Two more lovely vixens (or are they would-be victims?) have signed on to Darren Lynn Bousman's upcoming redux of Charles Kaufman's 1980 cult classic Mother's Day, one of which should come as no surprise given her previous working relationship with the director. Yes, Alexa (Repo!) Vega is joining the production, as is Sorority Row's Briana Evigan.
We admit having a soft spot for the ladies who continually return to our genre, and both Alexa and Briana (who also appeared in S. Darko) definitely fit that category, as does their previously announced co-star, Deborah Ann Woll from "True Blood". Which fact helps keep our hopes rising about the remake, wherein we'll see the villainous family, slightly expanded to include a daughter (Woll), return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests. All we know so far about the new characters is that Briana's is named Annette.

Jaime King has her cards and flowers ready for "Mother's Day," Darren Lynn Bousman's remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic, and Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega and Matt O'Leary are in talks to join the production.
The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother.
The new version, written by Scott Milam, is being remolded as a psychological thriller in which the wicked family returns to the house where they grew up to terrorize the new owners and their guests.
King will play the woman of the house, a wife who has lost her child and is isolating herself from her husband.
Ashmore and Evigan will play guests at the house. O'Leary ("CSI") is one of Mother's sons, joining the already cast Deborah Ann Woll as members of the family.

Actress Deborah Ann Woll has signed on to star in Darren Lynn Bousman's upcoming horror remake "Mother's Day" for Twisted Pictures (the studio behind the "Saw" flicks).
Woll, of course, is known for playing Jessica Hamby on television's "True Blood." She also briefly appeared on episodes for "My Name is Earl" and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."
"Day" is a remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 horror classic. In the new version, a crazy family returns to their old house to terrorize the new owners and their guests, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Bousman's credits include "Repo! The Genetic Opera" and three "Saw" films. Unsurprisingly, the release for "Day" is planned for some time around Mother's Day next year.

Deborah Ann Woll, known to True Blood fans for her turn as the vampire Jessica, is the first to enlist for Mother's Day . The picture is a redo of Charles Kaufman's '80s film of the same name. Darren Lynn Bousman will direct from a script by Scott Milam. According to THR, who sheds some more light on the plot, Mother's Day "sees a villainous family, slightly expanded to include a daughter (Woll), return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests. So, as you can tell, this remake is going to deviate slightly from the original. Shooting begins this fall in Manitoba for Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co., Rat Entertainment and LightTower Entertainment.

And the first looney ... er ... we mean actor. Yes, the first actor to sign on to Darren Lynn Bousman's upcoming redux of Charles Kaufman's 1980 cult classic has been named, and lord only knows what mayhem and carnage await her!
THR reports that everyone's favorite sexy and angsty vampire teen from HBO's hit series "True Blood", Deborah Ann Woll, is the first to sign up for psycho duty in Mother's Day.
The remake sees the villainous family, slightly expanded to include a daughter (Woll), return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests.
We all know Woll has the chops to play a villain, but with Bousman at the helm fangs are most likely to be the last of this new family's worries.
The filmmakers are shooting for a spring release timed to coincide with (what else?) Mother's Day. Cameras begin rolling this fall in Manitoba.

Troma sounds a lot like trauma and without knowing how they came up with the name I can't but help think it's on purpose. After all they've spent more than thirty years making sure there was something to offend somebody in virtually every movie they've made. Maybe that's why Troma is still around thirty years later. They bring a smile to the face of anyone who likes seeing sacred cows splattered even if at the end you feel a little messy yourself.
Lloyd Kaufman has made a living out of being able to brand that particular sentiment even when Troma's movies have been truly awful. In fact at times the studio has been so well known because of it’s boob baring antics that it itself has threatened to become a bigger product than any of it's films. This despite there having been some real classics, movies that I would...

We recently had a chance to catch up with director Darren Bousman, who is currently in the midst of planning his upcoming project, Mother’s Day, to get the early word for you guys.
Bousman said, “The original is great, but I definitely want to do this on my terms. This isn’t going to be a straight up remake either. Every time I step behind the camera, it’s my job to try to bring something new to the genre.”
Mother’s Day centers around a family of villains, led by a sadistic mother, who return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new inhabitants. The 1980 version of Mother’s Day directed by Charles Kaufman came from the house of Troma, which means the original is chock full of cheesiness and laughs.
Don’t expect that with Bousman’s version, who promised fans a gore-filled experience.

Remember the 1980 cult horror pic "Mother's Day" from Troma Films (I love all their cheesy, campy classics, by the way)? It's getting a remake makeover courtesy of our friends who brought us the "Saw" franchise!
So this one will be bloodier, more violent, more bone-crushing than the original!
Darren Lynn Bousman (he directed the second, third, and fourth "Saw" flicks) is set to helm. The story is about a ragtag of vicious, violent family, with a sadistic mother who instructs her sons to do all the killings. What a sweet momma :happy
Brett Ratner's Rat Entertainment company is set to co-produce, and the director of the original film, Charles Kaufman will co-exec produce.
When can you see it? Mother's Day of 2010! Take your mother to see the film, or...maybe not...
Meanwhile, let's re-live the gory days of the original with this trailer!

He added that the remake will be timely, reflecting today's foreclosures and tough economic times. "She's lost her house," Saperstein said. "Her boys are going to get it back to her." Wow, what does Darren Lynn Bousman's mom get for her special day? News that her son is remaking Charles Kaufman's Mother's Day, a 1980 exploitation horror flick from Troma that follows the hilarious misadventures of two brothers whose mom likes to watch them rape and murder women. Wait, did I say hilarious? Sorry, I meant icky and effed up. (But that doesn't mean I'm not going to Netflix it.) And no, it's not an existential and tripped-out treatise on love and mortality a la Charlie Kaufman. Charles Kaufman wrote and directed Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters, directed and produced Sextasy, and wrote Squeeze Play. He also has uncredited roles in Mother's Day as a cocaine addict and Squeeze Play as "Man with Popcorn in his Nose."Filed under: Horror, Deals, Distribution

The other day I was smoking a cigarette outside at 2am in my underwear, and I thought -- "I wonder how Darren Lynn Bousman is going to followup Repo!." Well it looks like god answered my question...Or at least Esplatter did. He is remaking Charles Kaufman's Mother's Day, and what a great time for the announcement since Mother's Day is only two days away. MD follows a mother and her two psychotic grown "boys" who kidnap and torment three women on a camping trip in the woods. It is pretty much a "cult classic" so at least Bousman will be able to call it as such and not be lying like he did with Repo!.
