The Surprise Box Office Hit Last Weekend? A Pottery-Making Cat
It’s doubtful J.D. Vance bought a ticket, but the ninth annual CatVideoFest sold a record $281,000 worth of tickets during the Aug. 3 weekend, when it opened on 106 screens across the country, with such venues as L.A.’s Vidiots playing to sold-out crowds. “It’s our biggest opening ever,” purrs Will Braden, the Seattle-based videographer who’s been running the festival since 2016. “It was way bigger than we expected.” Indeed, when you crunch the data, the fest — which is really just a 75-minute compilation reel featuring Braden’s edits of the best online feline content of the past year, like YouTube sensation Momo, a cat who makes pottery on a pedal wheel — performed better per screen than some major releases, including Harold and the Purple Crayon and Fly Me to the Moon. And those numbers should only go up as...

A stalwart of the Los Angeles retail scene has shuttered.
Fred Segal — the beloved, ivy-covered retail mecca on Melrose Avenue that birthed a chain of stores, helped set fashion trends and became a pop culture reference point in films like Clueless and Legally Blonde — closed its last two fashion locations in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, one in Malibu and the other on Sunset Boulevard. Fred Segal Home remains open in Culver City.
Los Angeles Times broke the news Tuesday, and published an interview with Jeff Lotman who has owned the business through his brand licensing firm Global Icons since 2019. Months later, a global pandemic set in, forcing Lotman to take on an active role in the day-to-day operations. “Everything just fell apart and then I sort of had to become a retailer, which is not what I planned to do,” Lotman told the paper, adding that the closure...

When Jared Leto faced the press last October to promote the launch of his skin and hair care line Twentynine Palms, the Oscar-winning actor and rock star said that he’s asked “all the time” to divulge the secret to his youthful appearance. “I do have a good answer for that, but I probably won’t tell you,” teased the 51-year-old to Men’s Health. “Just to keep everybody guessing. Really, honestly, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter.”
There’s a more pressing question in the air now for Leto and his Twentynine Palms celebrity brand, and this answer does matter: What happened?
Less than a year after a high-profile launch — touted in write-ups from Vogue to Vanity Fair and toasted at a starry Chateau Marmont party that hosted Andrew Garfield, Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds and former Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele — sales have ceased on the brand’s website.

“Perd Hapley is the lynchpin of an unlikely TV multiverse” is the name of the article you’re reading. And it will begin … right now.
NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation features the deepest bench of hilarious supporting characters you’ll ever see outside of The Simpsons‘ Springfield. But even among a murderer’s row of comedic talent like Joan Callamezzo (Mo Collins), Jean-Ralphio Saperstein (Ben Schwartz), and Tammy II Swanson (Megan Mullally), there’s one resident of Pawnee who stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Local news broadcaster Perd Hapley (Jay Jackson) is quite simply a TV icon. Blessed with a very distinct vocal style (that the Parks and Rec fandom Wiki accurately categorizes as “semantically redundant”), Perd often turns up on Parks and Recreation to help describe what’s happening … literally.

As Hollywood events return to full force in New York and Los Angeles amid the coronavirus pandemic, here’s a look at the week’s biggest premieres, parties and openings, including red carpets for And Just Like That, Don’t Look Up, Being the Ricardos, West Side Story and A Journal for Jordan.
Don’t Look Up world premiere
Adam McKay premiered his end of the world comedy Don’t Look Up in New York City on Sunday, where he was joined by stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Himesh Patel and Kid Cudi. “This is now,” writer-director McKay told The Hollywood Reporter of tackling the climate crisis with the film. “Right this second, the livable atmosphere is collapsing. We’re literally living in the movie. And if we don’t take immediate action, billions of people are going to die and we’re going to see this civilization collapse.

In this social media age, experiential events have become a crucial part of entertainment marketing plans. Instagram-friendly pop-ups had become common in recent years — Netflix turning a Baskin-Robbins location into the Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor from “Stranger Things” or Amazon Prime Video taking over the Hollywood Athletic Club to promote its Emmy contenders, for example.
But then came the pandemic. And marketers were forced to quickly pivot to safe, socially distanced events like drive-in premieres and virtual events such as online watch parties. But as vaccination rates continue to rise, marketers are aiming to balance those digital experiences with more in-person encounters.
Prime Video, for example, plans to promote its new series “Harlem” at the historic Harlem Parish, a New York City church-turned-event space, starting Dec. 3 with festivities dubbed “Harlem Ever After.” For the event, which highlights Black female creators and entrepreneurs, Prime Video is turning the Parish...

All of Chrissy Teigen loved all of John Legend in a bathroom at the Democratic National Convention, Teigen revealed during a game of “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” on James Corden’s “Late Late Show” Thursday. And because the model and cookbook author told the story of the “strangest” place she and her husband have ever become intimate, she did not have to eat a bull penis, as per the rules of Corden’s twisted late-night show game.
“We had some fun days. They’re gonna hate this…” Teigen said, when Corden first posed the question to her, reminding her that she did not have to answer, but then she would have to eat whatever weird dish was underneath the domed platter in front of her. “No, I want to, because I need to clear it up. Because one time at the Grammys I had said, ‘We had sex at that Obama thing.

Fred Segal, who was a fashion icon in Los Angeles for more than 60 years, has died because of complications from a stroke, his representatives confirmed Friday. He was 87.
“In 1961, Fred Segal created a retail scene that defined Los Angeles fashion and sparked a revolutionary shift in style that has transcended the last six decades. Fred Segal pioneered the shop-in-shop concept and experiential retail, resulting in a brand built on heritage, inclusivity and love that changed the face of retail forever,” read a statement.
Fred Segal’s became known as a high-end fashion boutique with a young and hip vibe. The stores lured customers including the Beatles, Elvis, Diana Ross, the Jackson Five, Nicole Kidman and Jefferson Airplane, among many others.
When Segal opened his West Hollywood store, 85 percent of the inventory in the 350‑square‑foot store was blue. Later, in a 700-square-foot store on Santa Monica Boulevard, Segal’s form-fitting fashion was a big hit.

“Clueless” turns 25 years old this weekend. Its fashion, culture references and teen slang may still be rooted in the ’90s, but the classic high school literary adaptation still has some of the most iconic quotes, one-liners and exchanges in movie history.
“That makes me so happy. When someone told me that their daughter and her friends decided to go as Cher and Dionne for Halloween, I was like, ‘oh my God, I f-king love that,'” writer and director Amy Heckerling said in an interview with TheWrap. “I was at the Museum of Modern Art and I heard someone quote the Monet part”

With their post-punk look — black suits, boots and skinny ties — Interpol were the most stylish band of the early-2000s New York rock boom. That’s still true, but these days frontman Paul Banks prefers more casual looks offstage, mixing vintage finds with high-end streetwear from brands like Y-3.
“It’s just about fun for me — it’s never about flaunting anything,” says Banks. Interpol just released their sixth album, Marauder, which adds some surprisingly musical textures to their lovably gloomy sound, and are still on a high from a 15th-anniversary tour celebrating their 2002 debut.

The glory days of Jim Morrison and the Laurel Canyon scene won’t ever return, but Bill Chait hopes his new restaurant Tesse goes a little ways toward bringing laid-back cool to the storied Sunset Strip.
Chait has been the business and creative muscle behind notable Los Angeles restaurants like Republique, Bestia, Sotto and Otium, all with high-style design and distinctive food. Some, like Bestia, were located in uncharted territory like the industrial district of downtown L.A.
His latest venture, in partnership with Jordan Ogron, is smack in the middle of the almost too-familiar Sunset Strip. But Chait says Tesse is the area’s most ambitious restaurant in years.
Chait was first approached by CAA, an investor in Fred Segal through Evolution Media Partners, to create a restaurant next to the flagship Sunset Blvd. boutique. The idea was to reference fashion in some way, which Chait says will come naturally through the clientele,...

Sales Of Monica Lewinsky's Handbags... Ummm... Suck
Monica Lewinsky may have to rethink her career as a businesswoman - sales of her handbags are already dropping just months after they arrived on the shelves. The former White House intern launched the line in February, using her fame from the Presidential sex scandal to sell personally designed handbags under the name Monica. But sales staff at the few exclusive stores where Lewinsky is selling her product insist no one's buying them. A salesperson at Los Angeles' Fred Segal store says, "They're not popular. They're not selling particularly well at all. I think she might be having more luck over the Internet."
