Designing Human-Robot Interactions: A StEER Tutorial

Abstract

In this three-hour tutorial you will learn how to design better—more reflexive—human-robot interactions. You will be introduced to the StEER design method, which aims to facilitate better grounding in embodied, interactional, and reflexive designs. StEER consists of four steps: (1) Stop, (2) Enact, (3) Engage, and (4) Reflect. As part of these steps, you will learn to use tools that can be deployed in the StEER design cycle, including the bodystorming design technique, transcription of video design materials, and working with model cards. After attending the tutorial, you will be able to deploy StEER and its surrounding techniques directly in your designs. The StEER approach is preparing researchers in both human-robot and human-computer interaction for designing systems that can navigate the social challenges emerging in increasingly complex, hyper local and global environments.
