From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dwáyšas (fear, hatred), from Proto-Indo-European *dwóy-sos, from *dwey- (to fear). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬀𐬵 n (duuaēšah, hostility), Ancient Greek δεινός (deinós), Middle Persian byš (bēš, pain), Latin dīrus.[1]
